Titans claim Bellevue Invitational for first time
Top-ranked Papillion-La Vista South showed the defending Class A volleyball state champion it definitely means business this season. The Titans defeated Omaha Marian 25-13, 25-14 on Saturday in the final of the 16-team Bellevue Invitational. Papio South finished as the tournament runner-up last season to the Crusaders, who went 42-1 and captured the state tournament. “I don't think it was payback,'' Titans coach Gwen Egbert said. “I just think we were motivated by the fact we came...

Cyclones sweep invitational titles
As the final cross country team scores were announced, Doug Renkly held his breath. The Harlan coach and his runners weathered some drama during Saturday’s Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln Invitational on a gorgeous morning at the Iowa Western campus. As the boys totals came in, it was apparent his group could finish anywhere from fourth to first. Fortunately for the Cyclones, it was the latter. Harlan, with 70 points, edged Sioux City North, 73; CB Thomas Jefferson, 74; and CB St. Albert,...

Blake Headley modestly said he's just doing his role in the Millard South offense. Right now, the Patriot senior and Nebraska baseball recruit is looking a lot like the quarterback who was ahead of him the past two years, all-stater Bronson Marsh. Headley fired four touchdown passes, three to Elijah Tostenson, in a 36-17 win Friday night over rival Millard West in a Metro Conference game that matched the top two teams in The Top 10.

On fourth-and-12 at the Harlan 17, Alex Olsen found 6-foot-6 tight end Jamison Lalk for a touchdown, and Nolan Webster's kick put the Lynx up 35-34 with 8:41 remaining. A.L. added two more scores in the final 4:34 to beat the...

Ground game helps Crete roll past SkyHawks
Crete rolled to its second straight football victory Friday night, and this one was personal. The visiting Cardinals, ranked No. 1 in Class B, blasted Omaha Skutt 40-0 in front of an estimated 2,000 fans. The ninth-ranked SkyHawks defeated Crete twice last season, including a second-round win in the state playoffs that ended the Cardinals' season. “They beat us 33-0 in the first game and then knocked us out of the playoffs,'' senior Ben Muff said. “We were out for a little revenge.''

Elkhorn escapes Blair in Class B showdown
His Class B No. 3 Antlers survived five turnovers and two miscues on punts, pulling out a 21-20 win over fourth-ranked Blair by scoring a touchdown in the final 30 seconds at Elkhorn Stadium.
