What to watch

Movie roundup: What's out now?

Avatar (PG-13) It's long, it's violent at times, but it's what every sci-fi fan wants to see right now. Disturbing images mean you should judge for yourself whether your tweener or young teen can handle this story of humans waging war to take over another planet.

Invictus (PG-13) An excellent and inspiring true story of how South African President Nelson Mandela used a rugby team to unite his racially divided nation. Matt Damon stars as captain of the rugby team. Good for tweens, teens and older, despite brief profanity.

Did You Hear About the Morgans? (PG-13) A bit of trash talk about being unfaithful, but this movie starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant has bigger problems. It's predictable, flat, unfunny and uses klinker stereotypes of rural life. A feuding couple from New York City witness a murder and are whisked to Wyoming in the witness protection program.

Red Cliff; Bad Lieutenant; The Road (R): Hold the line as your teen sons clamor to see these ultraviolent movies full of disturbing imagery. Bad Lieutenant features constant drug use and graphic sex, too. If your older teens handled "300" okay, they're probably up for "Red Cliff." But be warned: Spurting blood, being burned alive and dismemberment are salaciously presented as entertainment.

Starting next week:

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (PG) Mild, rude humor and annoyingly whiny voices mark this animated sequel. But why take the kids to this, when there are so many better animated movies playing: "The Princess and the Frog," "Planet 51" "Disney's A Christmas Carol" and "Fantastic Mr. Fox." Also, "Up" is still at the dollar theater, too.

Sherlock Holmes (PG-13): If the Indiana Jones movies aren't too intense for your tweener or teen, this probably won't be either. Smaller kids would be frightened or bored by this period murder mystery. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law star.

Up in the Air; Nine; It's Complicated (R): Sex, sex and more sex in this trio of Christmas Day openers. Not suitable for most high schoolers, unless you want them to think bed hopping is a competitive sport.
